Rational Points on Curves over Finite Fields

Preface These notes treat the problem of counting the number of rational points on a curve defined over a finite field. The notes are an extended version of an earlier set of notes Aritmetisk Algebraisk Geometri – Kurver by Johan P. Hansen [Han] on the same subject. In Chapter 1 we summarize the basic notions of algebraic geometry, especially rational points and the Riemann-Roch theorem. For th...

REU: Rational Curves over Finite Fields

Our main object of study is X ⊂ P5F2 , where X is the degree 5 Fermat hypersurface, which we are looking at in P over F2. X is the zero locus {X 0 +X 1 + ...+X 5 = 0}. The question is, “what kind of rational curves lie on X?” Since F2 only has one invertible element, P(F2) = F 2 \ 0, which suggests that the Fermat quintic has the same zero locus as the linear hypersurface X0 + X1 + ... + X5 = 0...

Construction of Rational Points on Elliptic Curves over Finite Fields

We give a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm that computes a nontrivial rational point on an elliptic curve over a finite field, given a Weierstrass equation for the curve. For this, we reduce the problem to the task of finding a rational point on a curve of genus zero.

Efficient Inversion of Rational Maps over Finite Fields

We study the problem of finding the inverse image of a point in the image of a rational map F : F q → F n q over a finite field Fq. Our interest mainly stems from the case where F encodes a permutation given by some public–key cryptographic scheme. Given an element y(0) ∈ F (F q ), we are able to compute the set of values x(0) ∈ F q for which F (x(0)) = y(0) holds with O(Tn4.38D2.38δ log q) bit...

Rational Points on Certain Hyperelliptic Curves over Finite Fields

Let K be a field, a, b ∈ K and ab 6= 0. Let us consider the polynomials g1(x) = x n + ax + b, g2(x) = x n + ax + bx, where n is a fixed positive integer. In this paper we show that for each k ≥ 2 the hypersurface given by the equation
